Fox’s Grease: Live trailer half-heartedly hand-jives into existence

Because anything another network can do, Fox can do stupider, the channel is plunging ahead with its decision to air Grease: Live, a real-time performance of the hit musical. Starring Julianne Hough, Aaron Tveit, Vanessa Hudgens, and Keke Palmer, it promises to follow in the grand tradition of Gilligan’s fateful tour—it’s a three-hour show, a three-hour show—and will probably go just as smoothly. This first trailer for the musical doesn’t exactly reveal much story, but then again, it doesn’t need to, because there’s not much story to speak of. It just offers a lot of hand-jiving, thumb-twitching, and knee-knocking dance moves, which is probably a fairly accurate summation of what the viewing experience will be like. It’s still not clear if Fox will maintain the syrupy-sweet tone of the movie adaptation or go back to the raunchier satire of the original, but if the entire history of Fox TV is any indication, it will somehow be simultaneously raunchier and more sanitized in equal measure.
