Fox throws white people a bone, buys pilot for Straight Outta Calabasas
Playing off the title of this fall’s blockbuster biopic Straight Outta Compton by replacing one Los Angeles County city with another—in this case, one where a bunch of TV-friendly, rich white people live—Fox has given a pilot commitment to a new comedy from the creators of Comedy Central’s Drawn Together. Straight Outta Calabasas won’t center on the struggle-filled rise of Justin Bieber or the childhood of Incubus singer Brandon Boyd, though, forgoing the whole biopic thing in favor of a single-camera comedy about “profoundly” white parents who find out their son is a prodigy in basketball. This exotic sports acumen then brings them into contact and friendship with another family that they have “nothing in common with,” which we’re just going to assume means that they’re black. Racially sensitive hijinks, one can only imagine, ensue.
Calabasas comes from writers and producers Dave Jeser and Matt Silverstein, whose non-Drawn Together credits include Axe Cop, Golan The Insatiable, and Andy Richter Controls The Universe. The pair will write the pilot together, presumably deploying the same crackerjack comedic timing that leads to a show with a Straight Outta Compton-based title landing on TV a mere year or so after the movie disappears from theaters.
