Foxcatcher moves to 2014, along with all the other movies making way for 12 Years A Slave

Yesterday saw the release of the first trailer for Moneyball director Bennett Miller’s wrestling drama Foxcatcher—featuring Steve Carrell as a crazy murderer, in a film that is still not that much-clamored-for Dan In Real Life sequel—before it mysteriously disappeared. Now we know why: Sony Pictures Classics announced via press release that it's delayed Foxcatcher until 2014, giving Miller more breathing room in editing, instead of racing to finish in time for awards season.

It’s just the latest in a string of confirmed and rumored delays for presumed Oscar contenders: Oliver Dahan’s Grace Of Monaco has already been moved to next year, and it’s been hinted that Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf Of Wall Street may soon follow suit. Perhaps they all just need more time for their respective directors to tinker and get things right; Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity and Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby were both bumped last year, and the former was showered with critical praise ahead of its fall opening, while the latter ended up financially successful. Or it could just be that every studio is running away from the festival hype surrounding 12 Years A Slave, believing there's just no winning against it.
