Frances Bean Cobain shares her first original song on the anniversary of her dad's death

Kurt Cobain was born on February 20th, 1967 and died on April 5th, 1994. To commemorate the former, his daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, shared a handwritten note thanking him for “giving me the gift of life.” Now, on the anniversary of the latter, she’s shared a snippet of an original song that’s clearly indebted to the late singer.

Cobain has shared the occasional cover on Instagram—as shared by NME, here’s her takes on Leonard Cohen and Jimmy Eat World—but this marks her first original. The a cappella performance is stark and vulnerable, and the accompanying caption asks you to “pls don’t steal my baby bean of an idea.”

As transcribed by Stereogum, the lyrics are as follows: “I think I saw you when I was small / I think I found you / A penny for your good thoughts / I think I found you / Jesus hangs in your place on the cross / All these hinges become unscrewed / Heaven knows it was a cage on earth.”

Not only do those sound like words her father would have written, but they’re heartbreaking in the context of their relationship. Kurt died when his daughter was just two years old, and Frances has watched her father become mythologized in her lifetime. The knowledge that she once shared air with him, even if she doesn’t remember it, is likely something she cherishes; the lyrics make it sound that way, at least.

In the comments, Cobain shares some more lyrics: “Stable sable sold her heart / No one asks her why she hides in a basket in her house in a box / Find a fiend who reigns supreme in May / Fast enough for blooming buds to lay their egg.”
