Frank Ocean’s dad is suing him for defamation
TMZ reports that Calvin Cooksey, father of celebrated R&B artist Frank Ocean, is suing his son for defamation. Cooksey’s claim hinges on a Tumblr post Ocean wrote shortly after the Orlando nightclub shootings, in which he reflected on his early exposures to homophobia and hatred at his father’s hands. “I was six years old when I heard my dad call our transgender waitress a faggot as he dragged me out a neighborhood diner saying we wouldn’t be served because she was dirty,” Ocean wrote. “That was the last afternoon I saw my father and the first time I heard that word, I think, although it wouldn’t shock me if it wasn’t.”
Cooksey is seeking $14.5 million in damages, claiming that his son’s writing caused him to lose out on film and music deals. (Although, given that his most notable credit seems to be “being Frank Ocean’s dad,” we’re not sure who was planning on signing a multi-million dollar deal with Cooksey in the first place.) This isn’t the first time Cooksey has gotten litigious about his dubiously good name; in 2014, a judge rejected a $142 million suit against Def Jam founder Russell Simmons for calling Cooksey a “deadbeat dad.”
