Freddy Krueger is now a Mortal Kombat character

Most video game representations of Freddy Krueger to date have been limited to the 8-bit “pooping disembodied head” of Nintendo’s A Nightmare On Elm Street, but now Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios hope to rectify that somewhat—albeit by bringing Krueger to the rather unlikely realm of Mortal Kombat. As seen in this recently released promo for Mortal Kombat 9, the Freud of the underworld has joined the long-running series as a downloadable character available August 9, taking on Scorpion, Sub-Zero et al. with his newly acquired dual razor claws. Though so far, that seems to be the only power Krueger has carried over: The gameplay here doesn’t hint at any withering puns, nor does it suggest Krueger defeats his opponents with elaborately constructed scenarios based on their deepest insecurities. Which is sort of a letdown, as Johnny Cage alone seems like a psychological smorgasbord. [via EW]
