Freeform assembles a cast for its Misfits remake

Freeform has assembled the cast for its Misfits remake, the network’s newest stab at the TV superhero game. Based on a popular British series about dysfunctional teenagers who develop a host of variably useful superpowers—ranging from reality warping and super strength down to “control over milk” and “irreversible shapeshifting into a tortoise”—the series will be run by Diane Ruggiero, best known for her work with Rob Thomas on shows like iZombie and Veronica Mars.

Freeform has found four of its five starring juvenile delinquents for the series, with Ashleigh Lathrop, Tre Hall, Allie MacDonald, and Jake Cannavale signing on for some superpowered community service. The characters all share names (if not necessarily personalities or backstories) with the original U.K. cast, with Lathrop playing spoiled party girl Alicia, Hall portraying talented football star Curtis, Cannavale as the overly confident Nathan, and MacDonald as street-smart Kelly. Given that part of the conceit of the original Misfits was that a person’s powers are strongly rooted in their personalities, it’ll be interesting to see how the four antisocial teens manifest their abilities in this new U.S. version of the show.
