Freeform gets on the Marvel bandwagon, orders a Cloak And Dagger series

It was only a matter of time before Freeform started developing a Marvel adaptation of its own, and not just because Marvel is/has a juggernaut. The channel is part of the Disney-ABC Television Group, and while bringing superheroes to the small screen probably isn’t a mandate (yet), Freeform’s older sibling ABC has three Marvel properties that are either currently airing, in development, or facing possible dissolution. Now the rebranded network is getting into the family business by bringing a “superhero love story” to its lovelorn-teen viewers.

Freeform has given a straight-to-series order to Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger, a live-action series that will center on the eponymous duo who have bounced around the Marvel comics universe, teaming up with Spider-Man and the New Mutants, among others. Cloak’s alter ego is Tyrone Johnson, a struggling teen who befriends Tandy Bowen (a.k.a Dagger) when she arrives in Boston (but not before considering mugging her). They’re experimented on against their will, after which they develop some cool new powers: Cloak can teleport himself and others through the “dimension of darkness,” and Dagger has the ability to both harm and heal with her “light daggers.”

Cloak and Dagger’s interracial relationship will be at the center of the series, as the two teens “quickly learn they are better together than apart,” but those same feelings “make their already complicated world even more challenging.” No one’s attached to write or star in the series yet, but Marvel Studios is producing.
