Fret not, Anglophiles: Reign is ending, but The Great British Baking Show is back

Here’s what’s up in the world of TV for Friday, June 16 and Saturday, June 17. All times are Eastern.

Top picks

Reign (Friday, The CW, 9 p.m.) / The Great British Baking Show (Friday, PBS, 9 p.m.): The sun never sets on the British Empire—at least not the portions of television still colonized by The Crown. Of course, Scotland is still its own kingdom during the events of Reign, The CW’s Mary, Queen Of Scots-by-way-of-Gossip Girl drama, which ends its four-season run tonight. At the same time, an entirely new dynasty begins to take shape on your local PBS station, where the tent is back up and American viewers are getting their last look at a version of The Great British Baking Show with Mel Giedroyc, Sue Perkins, and dear, sweet, no-bullshit Mary Berry. Genevieve Valentine can tell you all about what’s in store for Mary Stuart—but she’s saying nothing about who winds up winning this season of Baking Show.

Regular coverage

F Is For Family (Netflix)
Doctor Who (Saturday, BBC America, 9 p.m.)
Orphan Black (Saturday, BBC America, 10 p.m.)

Wild card

T.J. Miller: Meticulously Ridiculous (Saturday, HBO, 10 p.m.): This one really fits the bill: T.J. Miller gets wild in his first HBO special, coming to the stage completely soaked with water and laying text over the screen during some of his routines. But as Alex McLevy sees it, none of Meticulously Ridiculous’ absurdist bits are as strong as the traditional stand-up stuff. In other words, it’s a decent comedy special in which the comic just so happens to be soaked to the bone.
