From Ass to Class: Matthew Vaughn confirmed to direct next X-Men

After several weeks of hemming and hawing, Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn has been confirmed to helm X-Men: First Class in time for a June 3, 2011 release—officially taking the reins from producer Bryan Singer, who was forced to step down from de-Ratnerizing the franchise once his commitment to Jack The Giant Killer got in the way. The film is intended as a Star Trek-like reboot, going back to an era when Professor X and Magneto were still chess-playin' chums—and more characters like Cyclops and Jean Grey were sexy twentysomethings—and will examine the events that caused them to split. Singer fully endorsed Vaughn in an interview with Variety, saying, “He has a deft hand with multiple characters and storylines, and a great love of the X-Men universe.” And wherever you came down on Kick-Ass, it’s clear that Vaughn knows how to stage an action scene. Cautious optimism deployed.
