From door stops to cake, here’s how the internet is celebrating Hodor
This post contains plot details about the most recent episode of Game Of Thrones, so read at your own peril.
Last Sunday, Game Of Thrones finally gave fans an answer as to why Hodor only says “Hodor”—and then immediately killed him off. In other words, it was an emotional evening for Hodor fans and many of them took to the internet to process their feelings about the loyal servant’s untimely demise. After the episode aired, the first stories to emerge were about fans who had correctly predicted years ago that Hodor stood for “hold the door.” Then the show’s creators stopped by Jimmy Kimmel to apologize for all those Hodor jokes. Since then, all sorts of Hodor-related stuff has continued to flood the internet.
For instance, Kristian Nairn, the actor who played Hodor, took to Instagram to document the door-shaped cake he was gifted after the episode aired:
He adorably shared the cake with his co-star Isaac Hempstead Wright, who plays Bran Stark:
Hempstead Wright, meanwhile, had this to say about his character’s colossal fuckup that led to Hodor’s death:
He’s since reassured fans that his friendship with Nairn remains as strong as ever:
Meanwhile, fans have taken it upon themselves to memorialize Hodor in the real world. For instance, Twitter has been filled with photos of people replacing the “hold the door” button on elevators with pictures of Hodor.
Meanwhile one entrepreneurial Etsy user immediately began selling these clever Hodor door wedges for $30 each. (Or, you know, you could just purchase a doorstop at the hardware store for $2 and glue your own picture of Hodor to it.)
And finally, Nairn stopped by the Game Of Owns podcast to debrief about his emotional exit. He’s been a frequent guest and friend of the show, and he opens up about how challenging it was to film the scene and how glad he is that Hodor went out in a blaze of glory. He also reveals that Hempstead Wright was allowed to officially “wrap” Nairn after he filmed his final take. He reassures the hosts, saying, “It feels like the end of something, which obviously it is. But I’ll be okay, guys. I’ve got money and stuff.”
Oh, and for the record, yes, he’s already seen the Hodor doorstop. Please stop tweeting it at him.
