Finally: A video game where Funko Scott Pilgrim can fight Funko The Thing

Dear god, who asked for a game where Funko versions of M3GAN, Doc Brown, The Umbrella Academy, and the creature from NOPE can all duke it out?

Finally: A video game where Funko Scott Pilgrim can fight Funko The Thing

Look, we’ll be honest here, folks: This one is mostly coming from the “Please get these intrusive thoughts out of our head” department. We know there’s a lot of news floating around today, most of it being spewed from the gigantic pop culture maw that is Comic-Con. But we need to not be the only people who have watched this trailer for upcoming video game Funko Fusion, i.e., the video game where Funko versions of Scott Pilgrim and the cast of The Mummy can face off against Funko versions of Jean Jacket from Nope, and John Carpenter’s The Thing.

We’ve known about the game for a while now, but never had its incredibly weird mish-mash of Universal-owned IPs rubbed in our face quite like in this latest trailer. (Ignore all the stuff with Clancy Brown and magic crowns and shit; did you know Funko Pops have a mascot who looks like Archie? We didn’t!)

We just… can’t stop staring at the assembled list of brands being invoked, as Funko attempts to Smash Bros. together M3GANBack To The FutureHot Fuzz, the old Battlestar GalacticaChucky, and every other franchise they could pry out of Universal’s hands in service of… Well, we have no idea. Probably a riff on the Lego video games, except which characters who all look almost entirely identical except for their different clothes and hair. We admire the sheer audacity of the thing—Knight RiderInvincibleObviously Five Nights At Freddy’s!—while also being unable to stop ourselves from staring at it like it’s The Terminal Point for modern pop culture’s obsession with the mash-up. It is beautiful and terrible, like looking into the eye of God, or being buried in time and space in a steadily accruing black hole made entirely of discarded Funko Pops.
