Furious 8 gets a release date
Furious 7 made $1 billion faster than a car falling out of a plane, hitting the milestone in a mere 17 days and pushing out The Avengers and Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which both took 19 whole sluggish days to make a billion.
Now Furious 8, which will have to find a way to top flying cars, has a release date. Vin Diesel announced at Universal’s CinemaCon today that the eighth installment in the franchise will drop on April 14, 2017. “One last ride,” said Dom in Furious 7. Yeah, sure. There are no signs of the franchise slowing down, even without Brian O’Conner, so we never believed you anyway, Dom.
Before making the announcement, that final stare-and-drive between Dom and Brian at the end of Furious 7 played, and Diesel got nostalgic about 2013’s CinemaCon, when he and fellow cast members—including Paul Walker, who died later that year—announced the seventh film. “We were giddy and excited,” Diesel said. “You all gave me so much confidence. There was so much love.”
Earlier this year, Diesel said the next movie will take place in New York, a city the F&F squad hasn’t visited yet, and that Kurt Russell’s government agent/Corona hater will be a significant character. We’re curious to know if Nathalie Emmanuel’s Ramsey will become a permanent fixture for the crew as well. A director for Furious 8 has yet to be announced.
