We’ve been writing about a potential Y: The Last Man adaptation since 2010 and, since then, have burned through so many Newswires about the damn thing that we were forced to construct a timeline of its development. Our senses tingled, then, when Diane Lane and Amber Tamblyn were cast last summer, the dual announcements serving as a reminder that FX started developing this thing back in 2015. Well, the wheels have continued to turn, apparently, because FX has officially ordered it to series.
If you’re new to this corner of Newswire, Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s Y: The Last Man tells the epic story of a man and his monkey in a post-apocalyptic world populated solely with women. Joining Lane and Tamblyn will be Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, Juliana Canfield, and Marin Ireland, as well as The Killing Of A Sacred Deer’s Barry Keoghan, who we’re going to go out on a limb and guess is our titular man.
FX’s version, however, will simply be called Y. Michael Green, who recently cut ties with Starz’s American Gods, will serve as showrunner with Aïda Mashaka, a veteran writer of Netflix’s Marvel offerings. Vaughan, meanwhile, will serve as an executive producer. And, as we previously reported, Melina Matsoukas will flex the skills she honed helming Beyoncé videos and episodes of Insecure as the pilot’s director.
“Brian and Pia’s exploration of a world without men is a favorite for its depth, its humor, its insights and its monkey,” Croal and Green said in a statement. “Adapted today it offers us a cracked mirror to look at our own very cracked world. We thank them for their trust—we thank FX for their support—and we thank the casting gods for letting us work with this incredible group of actors.”
Before you get too excited, however, know that it won’t premiere until 2020. In the meantime, enjoy your first glimpse at the series in the above photo. It’s not much but, hey, it’s the most we’ve gotten in eight years.
