FX still down to clown, renews Baskets for a second season

Fans of existentially bleak tragicomedy, Zach Galifianakis, and/or Louie Anderson in a wig have reason to smile today: FX has renewed Baskets for a second season. In a press release announcing the move, FX says that Baskets was the “most-watched basic cable primetime comedy series premiere since 2014,” one of several ratings records set by the show of the type that network executives just love. (Only football announcers are more obsessed with statistics. And, you know, statisticians.) Baskets stars Galifianakis as the eponymous Chip Baskets, a semi-classically trained clown who is forced to work at a rodeo after returning to his hometown of Bakersfield, California. The A.V. Club’s Vikram Murthi gave the show’s fifth episode an A, saying, “for all of its abrasiveness and melancholy, Baskets can be a very sweet show.”

Baskets airs Thursdays at 10 PM ET/PT on FX.
