A delayed The Old Man season 2 finally gets a trailer and release date
FX also announced other fall premiere dates, including our very first round of American Sports Story
Your dad’s favorite TV show is almost back. Alright, fine, The Old Man is most likely everyone’s cup of tea thanks to the killer lead duo of Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow. The rest of the cast—Alia Shawkat, Amy Brenneman, and Hiam Abbass—only make the deal sweeter. The thriller debuted in 2022 to become one of FX’s most-watched originals. Now, finally, it’s back for seconds.
During the 2024 Television Critics Association (TCA) summer press tour, the cable network announced that The Old Man season two debuts on September 12 at 10 p.m. ET with two episodes. The remaining six will air weekly on FX and all episodes will drop on Hulu the following day. Along with a release date, there’s also a brief teaser that’s aptly set to Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun.”
Former CIA operative Dan Chase (Bridges) is forced to come out of hiding when his old war buddy, the FBI’s Harold Harper (Lithgow), comes chasing. When the show returns, though, the two actually team up to rescue Emily (Shawkat) after she is kidnapped by an Afghan tribal leader named Faraz (Navid Negahban). In a weird, Mamma Mia-esque twist, all three men claim her as their daughter, so Emily’s identity crisis leads to more problems.
Created by Robert Levine and Jonathan E. Steinberg, the series is based on Thomas Perry’s 2017 novel of the same name. The ensemble features Jacqueline Antaramian, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Bill Heck, E. J. Bonilla, Pej Vahdat, Echo Kellum, and Joel Grey.
At its TCA panel, FX announced other fall premiere dates, including American Sports Story, whose acronym will no doubt be the butt of a few jokes. Co-produced by Ryan Murphy, the first installment of this anthology tells the story of NFL superstar Aaron Hernandez (Josh Rivera), exploring his rise and fall, personal life, career, death, and complicated legacy.
The 10 episodes are based on the podcast Gladiator. Jaylen Barron, Ean Castellanos, Thomas Sadoski, Norbert Leo Butz, Tammy Blanchard, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Lindsay Mendez round out the cast. American Sports Story will premiere on Sunday, September 17 with two episodes at 10 p.m. ET.
Don’t worry. FX hasn’t forgotten about adding comedies to its lineup, even if What We Do In The Shadows is curiously absent. We’ve at least got English Teacher from Brian Jordan Alvarez. Set in a Texas high school, it centers on Evan Marquez (Alvarez) as he navigates his career and friendships with his peers. Oh, and he is being investigated for kissing his ex-boyfriend in front of his students. The eight-episode season debuts on September 2, and co-stars Enrico Colantoni, Stephanie Koenig, Sean Patton, Carmen Christopher, Jordan Firstman, and Langston Kerman.
Meanwhile, the next New York Times Presents documentary, Lie To Fly, premieres on August 23. Per FX, it digs into a growing movement calling for reform of the FAA’s strict rules around pilot mental health. The company is also releasing Lauren Greenfield’s documentary Social Studies on September 27. Filmed in Los Angeles over a school year, it follows diverse teens discussing the visceral impact of social media on their childhood.
