FX's Better Things is getting the fourth season it deserves

Better things are coming to FX. Specifically, more of Pamela Adlon’s Better Things are coming.

On Tuesday, FX announced plans to renew Adlon’s excellent dramedy series for a fourth season. Network chairman John Landgraf said of the renewal in a press release, “Rarely has there been a show that is so personal and, at the same time, so thoroughly universal in the way it explores modern parenting, family and life. We are thrilled to extend the series for a fourth season and to continue this incredible partnership with Pamela, her creative team and the amazing cast of Better Things.”

That’s a strong vote of confidence in the show—though one that’s not too surprising considering the consistent critical praise its received—which has only aired four episodes of its current third season so far. Just a year and a half ago, the future of Better Things looked grim. After the beginning of the end of Louis C.K., when the comedian admitted to the sexual misconduct allegations against him, the fate of the FX series remained up in the air near the end of its second season. The network swiftly cut ties with the co-creator, and it all nearly led Adlon to walk away from the show altogether, as she recently told Variety. Thankfully Better Things continued, moving forward with a C.K.-less free third season, and allowing Adlon to make the autobiographical series completely her own.

Adlon, who stars as a woman juggling the duties of being a mom of three, an actress, and the daughter of pestering mother, directed all twelve episodes of the latest season. So far, it’s been nothing but stellar, and we can’t wait to see what Adlon will cook up for a fourth season, set to debut in 2020.
