Fyre Festival's extremely "dedicated" Andy King might be getting his own reality show
Although debate is still raging about which of last month’s high-profile documentaries about the disastrous Fyre Festival was better—with Netflix’s Fyre offering a better narrative, while Hulu’s Fyre Fraud attempted to be a more comprehensive explanation of how this clusterfuck went down—pretty much everyone who’s seen Netflix’s offering on the topic can agree on one point: That Andy King story is fucked up.
You know the one: It’s where future prison tenant Billy McFarland essentially orders King, a veteran event producer who McFarland dubbed the festival’s “wonderful gay leader” to drive across an island and, quote, “suck dick” to get a huge shipment of bottled water released from customs. And while it didn’t end up coming to that, King’s delivery of the absurd anecdote—slightly bashful, mostly deadpan—in the Netflix doc has become an irresistible moment for people talking about the whole debacle. It’s produced online jokes, memes, and now—because this is 2019, and nothing can just be fun—at least a few reality show pitches for the 58-year-old King.
This is per Vanity Fair, which did an interview with King, a behind-the-scenes guy who mostly just seems bemused by his newfound 15 minutes of fame. So far, he’s mostly used his celebrity to point people toward a GoFundMe created to help pay a bunch of people in the Bahamas who got stiffed when the festival collapsed, or to push people in the direction of his efforts to create zero-waste events to replace the massive piles of plastic and paper that concerts and festivals currently produce. But he’s also been approached with TV offers from “major networks,” and seems to be taking them seriously (for a fun value of seriously, at least). His pitch: “You’re too young to remember this, but in the old world of TV it was The Carol Burnett Show and these fun, light-hearted shows that weren’t all crime-related. You see the attractiveness of HGTV today. People love Flip or Flop or Fixer Upper. Let’s just say it’s going to be a show about hosting crazy events—what it takes to make them happen. There will be cliff-hangers, and you’ll get to follow me around and see how I pull them off.”
