Gambit producer promises both a “heist movie” and a “sexy thriller”

According to Collider, the superhero genre will finally intersect with the heist and sexy-thriller genres when Channing Tatum’s Gambit hits theaters. Simon Kinberg, the producer who manages the Marvel films at Fox, weighed in on how each franchise property has its own unique flair. “The X-Men movies are dramatic and almost operatic,” said Kinberg, “whereas Deadpool is irreverent and hysterical.” As for the upcoming Gambit film, Kinberg described the project as “more of like a heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way.”

Of course, this is a superhero movie, so it might be premature to hope for a mash-up of Heist and Body Heat with a dash of Magic Mike XXL. After all, Doug Liman is the most recent director to be tasked with filming Gambit, which means his idea of a sexy thriller is Mr. And Mrs. Smith, and his idea of a heist movie is Jumper. In other words, take your “sexy-thriller-heist-superhero” Venn diagram and circumscribe everything in a fourth circle labeled “kind of dumb.”

Because of the change-up in directors, Gambit is no longer scheduled for a fall 2016 release, but we should get to hear Channing Tatum’s indubitably pitch-perfect Cajun accent sometime in 2017. Of course, with all of that extra time, Kinberg can push this movie one step closer in the right direction by casting Ricky Jay as Gambit’s inscrutable mentor, shifty drinking buddy, or a heavy-breathing crime boss.
