Game Of Thrones casts its Stannis and Melisandre

With certain central characters gone and a whole new set of stories to tell, Game Of Thrones has been busy adding new faces to its cast—though so far, most of them aren’t the sort of big names seen in the first season. Following previous reports that Natalie Dormer (The Tudors’ Anne Boleyn) would take the role of Margaery Tyrell and Gwendoline Christie would play fan favorite Brienne, Maid of Tarth, producers have now filled out two more roles. British actor Stephen Dillane will play Stannis Baratheon, the eldest younger brother of King Robert who’s seeking the Iron Throne. Dillane is perhaps best known to American audiences from his role as Thomas Jefferson in the Emmy-winning miniseries John Adams—though he certainly had plenty of other actors vying for attention. Joining him as Stannis’ sorceress counselor Melisandre will be Carice van Houten, a Dutch actress known, sort of, for her appearances in Valkyrie and Repo Men. The news comes just before Game Of Thrones heads to Comic-Con for its first panel moderated by George R.R. Martin.
