Game Of Thrones showrunners recorded the audio commentary for Rick And Morty's "Pickle Rick" episode
Though your personal preference may vary, Szechuan sauce and “I’M PICKLE RICK” are easily in the top five most-circulated bits and quotes from Rick And Morty season three. The former took on risible life outside of the show, while the latter has had its Breaking Bad parallels broken down by co-creator Dan Harmon. The “Pickle Rick” episode even drew in the Game Of Thrones showrunners and one of the fantasy drama’s stars to record audio commentary for its upcoming home release.
Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive on the audio commentary from David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Peter Dinklage, who can be heard laughing throughout the family therapy scene in Dr. Wong’s (Susan Sarandon) office. Benioff and Weiss have effused over the show in the past, calling it “one of the funniest, smartest things ever put on TV,” so it’s no surprise to hear them refer to the “Pickle Rick” monologues some of the best writing of 2017.
Applauding Rick and Dr. Wong’s “monologuist” abilities is really the extent of the Thrones star and showrunners’ observations of the episode, which sees Rick (Justin Roiland) turn himself into a pickle to avoid joining his daughter Beth (Sarah Chalke) and grandkids Morty and Summer (Roiland and Spencer Grammer, respectively) in hashing out their feelings. Otherwise, the trio alternates between chuckling and marveling at one of their favorite acerbic speeches from Rick. From the episode:
Because I don’t respect therapy, because I’m a scientist. Because I invent, transform, create, and destroy for a living, and when I don’t like something about the world, I change it. And I don’t think going to a rented office in a strip mall to listen to some agent of averageness explain which words mean which feelings has ever helped anyone do anything. I think it’s helped a lot of people get comfortable and stop panicking, which is a state of mind we value in the animals we eat, but not something I want for myself. I’m not a cow. I’m a pickle. When I feel like it. So…you asked.
As Rick vents, Weiss wonders “Who wrote that? Whoever wrote that, stand up and take a bow.” So, if you’re reading this, Rick And Morty writer Jessica Gao, Tyrion Lannister and the Game Of Thrones showrunners salute you.
