George Miller has Mad Max sequel ideas, is taking his sweet time with them
Mad Max: Fury Road fans craving more post-apocalyptic blood, oil, and dirt in their veins and on their screens are going to have to wait a while for George Miller’s follow-up. This guy is probably pissed. John Teti’s mom could probably go either way.
In an interview on Entertainment Weekly’s SiriusXM radio station, Miller discussed his Golden Globe-nominated summer blockbuster as well as his hopes for the future of Max’s hope-deprived world. As we’ve previously reported, Miller has made it very clear that there are multiple sequels bouncing around in his brain, though it’s unclear if Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa will have much to do—if anything—in any of them. But new ideas: He’s got ’em.
In the EW radio interview, when asked if he had focused in on what he wants to do in the immediate follow-up to Fury Road, Miller replied: “Yes, I have … And [I’m] certainly having conversations about it. But I’m not sure if it’s the very next movie I want to do. I’ve got something a bit smaller before we go back out into the wasteland—something that’s contemporary that we can get through fairly quickly. And something with not too much technical difficulty. Something more performance-based and so on, just to clear the exhaust.” In other words, he’s not speeding down the fury road to get this next installment done; he’s going to take the scenic route.
Meanwhile, Miller remains as vague as possible about the possibility of Furiosa’s return. “Her backstory is really interesting,” Miller said. “We only allude to it in this movie, because this movie is on the run; people don’t have much time for recreational talk. But you pick up, you have a sense of her having gone through stuff. That’s what the film is trying to do. You’re trying to put a lot of iceberg under the tip, I like saying.” So show us that iceberg already, Miller!
