2017’s been full of Tupac Shakur tributes: Not only have we finally seen a trailer for his All Eyez On Me biopic, but someone recently made the late artist’s restaurant dreams come true. And his Cali rap contemporary, Snoop Dogg, inducted him into the Rock Hall just last week. The latest site for a Tupac memorial is actually an old one, as TMZ reports that Georgia is getting a bronze statue of the Me Against The World rapper to replace its old one. The Southern state was once home to the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts, a non-profit center that was founded by his late mother, Afeni Shakur. The center closed in 2015 amid waning profits on his music catalog, and the Tupac statue that once welcomed visitors was packed up by his remaining family.
Now the owner of the closed Stone Mountain, GA amphitheater, Jim Burnett, has hired Nijel Binns, a sculptor whose work includes a statue of Michael Jackson, to head up the artistic initiative. Binns showed off a 13-inch clay model of the proposed bronze statue, which will be 7 feet tall in real life. Burnett thinks the project will cost about $500,000 to complete, though it’s unclear where the funding will come from. The statue is set to be unveiled some time in September.
