Gerard Depardieu battles to stay King Of The Lumps in the trailer for Netflix’s Marseille

Netflix has released the trailer for its latest foreign-language original series, Marseille, centering on a fractious, violent battle for political power in the titular French city, as waged by beloved lump-faced Green Card holder Gerard Depardieu. Depardieu plays Mayor Robert Taro, a career politician who faces an usurpation from his former student, Benoît Magimel, cruelly indifferent to his mentor’s twin roles as both a father, and a hero.

If the trailer is anything to go by, the conflict between the two men quickly turns gravel-voiced and violent, as they battle each other in the cutthroat world of French politics—a true meritocracy where two men can compete at the top level despite both looking like bowls of mashed potatoes that have been clumsily stuffed into suits. The subtitled series—Netflix’s first French-language production—is set to debut worldwide on May 5.
