Geronimo, allons-y, fantastic, et cetera: Doctor Who’s 13th Doctor has arrived

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Sunday, October 7. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

Doctor Who (BBC America, 1:45 p.m.): Last December, Peter Capaldi’s Doctor warned his successor, unknown to him, to never eat pears, run fast, and be kind. With that, the 12th let go, and the 13th—Jodie Whittaker, the first woman to play the role—appeared. “Aw, brilliant,” she said, and then the TARDIS blew up. Here we are, months later, and the Doctor isn’t the only thing that’s new. Today’s season premiere brings in new companions, a new version of the theme music, a new logo, and a new sonic screwdriver. Oh, yes, and there’s a new showrunner, too: Broadchurch’s Chris Chibnall, a writer for both Who and its spin-off Torchwood, now holds the tiller. Geronimo, allons-y, and so on.

Today’s premiere will be broadcast in the U.S. and the U.K. simultaneously, but if you miss it in the afternoon, you’ll have another chance when it airs again in its regular time-slot at 8 p.m. As for Caroline Siede, she and her bow tie, sunglasses, and handy spare hand will await you when the 1:45 premiere concludes.

Regular coverage

The Simpsons (Fox, 8 p.m.)
Bob’s Burgers (Fox, 8:30 p.m.)
Shameless (Showtime, 9 p.m.)
The Deuce (HBO, 9 p.m.)
The Walking Dead (AMC, 9 p.m.): 90-minute ninth season premiere
Venture Bros. (Adult Swim, midnight)
The Man In The High Castle (Amazon, continuing)

Wild card

Most Terrifying Places In America (Travel Channel, 11 p.m.): Ha ha, everywhere is terrifying right now. That’s not quite what the Travel Channel had in mind when it set out to tour some of the spoooooookiest places in America, but still, everywhere is terrifying right now. Let’s just assume it’s extra terrifying if you live in one of the titular “Cursed Towns” of this episode. For more American horror stories, see The Circus: Inside The Greatest Political Show On Earth (Showtime, 8 p.m.), Last Week Tonight With John Oliver (HBO, 11:05 p.m.), and The Family Business: Trump And Taxes (Showtime, 8:30 p.m.), a behind-the-scenes look at the reporting of last week’s blockbuster New York Times story.
