Get all your Christmas viewing done at once with help from the Eclectic Method

Let’s face it. It’s December 8 already. Those who haven’t gotten a good head start on watching all the classic Christmas movies and TV episodes by now should either start binge-watching—forsaking work, school, and social interaction in the process—or look for some time-saving shortcuts. Self-described “digital outlaw” and video remixer Eclectic Method, who specializes in “splic[ing] together music, TV and film and set[ting] it to high-energy dance beats,” has done the public a great service by creating “Christmas Spirit,” a catchy, two-and-a-half-minute roundup of Yuletide highlights from Elf, Scrooged, It’s A Wonderful Life, Jingle All The Way, South Park, Home Alone, Gremlins, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Die Hard, Frosty The Snowman, and more. Watching this one video takes care of about 75 percent of the Christmas canon in one fell swoop. A Christmas Story is absent, but that runs for an entire day on television, so just catch it then.

What’s really remarkable about “Christmas Spirit” is that Eclectic Method has organized these snippets into a sequential, rhyming song. Through the miracle of editing, Phoebe Cates and Will Ferrell are able to complete a couplet about Santa Claus, even though they’re in moves decades apart. Though the overall mood here is sweet, the remix artist has admirably kept things from becoming too treacly. The video is largely organized around a rendition of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” from Elf, meaning that it contains a copious amount of footage of Zooey Deschanel in the shower. Eclectic Method also includes one disturbing shot of a dead-eyed, animated Brian Boitano explaining what Christmas is all about. Viewers sensitive to the sight of a dampened Deschanel or a soulless skating zombie are duly warned.
