Get an inside look at the development of Star Wars Republic Commando

2005’s Republic Commando is widely regarded as one of the best video games to ever emerge from the Star Wars machine, and certainly one of the best to come out in the prequel era. Beyond its stellar gameplay and squad AI that excels even by today’s standards, it’s notable for being one of the few Star Wars titles to explore the lives of someone without midichlorians (Why that vein remains so underdeveloped—even though it is so very rich—is a mystery.)

So it’s good news that, in what is hopefully the beginning of a trend, Republic Commando’s lead programmer Brent Douville has started a commentated playthrough of the entire game. Douville’s weekly series is only on its first episode as of this writing, but it already provides a ton of insight into almost every aspect of development. Even if you’re not at all interested in game development, it’s an amazing glimpse into some of the hard work and passion that went into one of Star Wars’ best games. Check out part one, embedded below.
