Get down with the emotional trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s The Get Down

The first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s new Netflix series The Get Down has debuted, and as can be expected from Luhrmann, it features lots of singing and dancing and paints a very romanticized picture of a group of teens in the Bronx in the ’70s who follow Grandmaster Flash in his efforts to shape the burgeoning hip-hop scene. The lengthy trailer teases out some of the emotions at play for its main characters—which run high in the trailer and can be heard clearly in the singing—and establishes the flashy style of Luhrmann’s direction. The Get Down stars Jaden Smith (is anyone sure if he ever saw Shia Labeouf?), Giancarlo Esposito, Jimmy Smits, Paper Towns’ Justice Smith, and Dope’s Shameik Moore.

The 13-episode first season of The Get Down will drop later this year.
