Get hyped for Jordan Peele's Us with a spooky remix of Luniz's "I Got Five On It"
The first trailer for Jordan Peele’s Us resurrected the 1995 hit “I Got 5 On It” to great effect, and, as we noticed when we caught the film at SXSW last week, the song is more than a mere audio cue. Peele and composer Michael Abels cleverly braid Luniz’s silken track into the film’s sonic fabric, having produced an eerie, unsettling remix that suits the film’s smothering sense of dread. It’s called the “Tethered Mix,” and now you can hear it in full.
The remix comes with the announcement of Us’ soundtrack, which also features Janelle Monáe’s “I Like That” and Minnie Riperton’s “Les Fleur.” Abels’ score is gripping enough on its own, however, with booming percussion and sumptuous, swooning strings intermingling with the kind of ghostly vocals that belong in a cathedral.
It’s out today via Back Lot Music. Stream it below ahead of Us’ March 22 premiere.
