Get Involved, Internet: Fund a documentary about Bill Nye

Documentary filmmakers David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg (The Immortalists) grew up with an interest in science, mostly due to the work of self-proclaimed “science guy” Bill Nye. These days, Bill Nye is traveling the world and teaching science to adults, so Alvarado and Sussberg have decided to make a documentary about Nye’s life and the way he has impacted science education. Nye is fully involved in the film, and it looks like it is going to be specifically dedicated to the people who loved watching his videos in science class when they were kids.

To pay for the documentary, Alvarado and Sussberg have turned to Kickstarter, and they’re hoping to raise $650,000 by August 13. As of right now, Bill Nye fans have pledged just shy of $8,000, so there’s still a ways to go, but plenty of time to do it. As you would expect, the project also offers a number of wacky Bill Nye-related Kickstarter rewards, including “Bill Nye Emojis” for $10, a collection of digital Nye goodies for $15, a chance to see the finished film early for $25, a Bill Nye bowtie for your dog for $35, and—as one of the requisite outlandish awards for a huge pledge—Bill Nye will come to your school and teach a class if you donate $10,000.
