Get Involved, Internet: Help Björk teach low-income students about music

One again proving that nowadays, success in the music business doesn’t pay the bills, Björk has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the expansion of her Biophilia app to Windows8, Android, and Mac Desktop. The weirdly educational app was first released for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch in 2011, and houses 10 different mini-apps, each of which matches up with a song on Björk’s Biophilia album.

The apps are more than just weird things for commuters to mess around with, though. They form the curriculum of the Biophilia Educational Program, which is a non-profit, volunteer-based music and technology education program for low-income students. Workshops designed by Björk to illustrate the intersection of nature, science, and music have already taken place at schools in Reykjavik, New York City, Manchester, Oslo, Sao Paulo, and Buenos Aires, and the singer plans to expand the program further over the next few years.

Björk and her team hope to raise £375,000 by the end of February, or about $589,000. Anyone who pledges more than £10 gets a copy of the app. Those who pledge more than £650 get, among other things, a ticket to one of Björk’s upcoming Biophilia residency shows, as well as post-show drinks with performers, though the Kickstarter notes that a “Björk appearance [is] not guaranteed.”
