Get Involved, Internet: Help Kickstart De La Soul’s new record

De La Soul is using Kickstarter to fund a new record. The legendary hip-hop trio is trying to raise $110,000 for its eighth LP, its first since 2004’s The Grind Date. While the album isn’t recorded yet, the group says it’ll feature appearances from Damon Albarn, David Byrne, 2 Chainz, and Little Dragon. The record also finds the group sampling itself almost exclusively, a move that could turn out to be a game-changer for artists with a lot of back material. It’s especially interesting considering it’s De La Soul, a group that’s been sued for illegally using copyrighted material and hasn’t been able to put a good portion of its catalog on the web for similar issues.

De La Soul is offering a number of incentives to Kickstarter donors, including pairs of De La Soul Nikes, thumb drives in the shape of each member’s head, a Skype date with the trio, and even a shopping trip with one of the group members. The group was even offering up Dave “Trugoy” Jolicoeur’s gold record for 3 Feet High And Rising, but some exceptionally generous $10,000 donor locked that down already.
