Get involved, internet rude boys: Fund a documentary on ska in the '90s

Q: How many members of a ska band does it take to change a light bulb? A: 10—one guy to drop the bulb, and nine others to stand around yelling, “Pick it up pick it up pick it up!”

If you were one of the many who looked forward to Saturday afternoon all-ages shows back in the ’90s, because they were the only time you really got to do some serious skanking, you’re probably the target demographic for a new Kickstarter campaign. Pick It Up! Ska In The ’90s is a new documentary looking for support, and the people involved appear to be the real deal. (Director Taylor Morden previously helmed Here’s To Life: The Story Of The Refreshments, so he knows of what he speaks.) They’ve already conducted interviews with members of No Doubt, The Pietasters, Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, Goldfinger, Fishbone, Sublime, Dance Hall Crashers, and many more.

The filmmakers were self-financing the project up until now. But it looks like funds have run out, so they’re turning to crowdfunding to help see the film through to completion. As always, there’s an array of goodies to entice you to contribute, including lots and lots of swag that says “Pick it up!”—which, as we all know, is the ska equivalent of the Masonic symbol, a way for fellow travelers to identify their brethren. It just launched, so you’ve still got more than a month during which to contribute, but you may as well act fast: They’re already a quarter of the way to their $40,000 goal. That’ll buy a lot of checkered Vans.
