Although it’s still wrapping up its freshman year, I’m-a-singin’-what-I’m-thinking-hey-look-at-that-dog! dramedy Glee was picked up for a third season over the weekend. The move suggests Fox has a lot of confidence that the show’s current top 10-rated hold over pop culture will remain strong as Glee moves into its second chapter (and hopefully not fall prey to the fatigue that’s greeted so many other similarly zeitgeist-y shows in their victory laps, such as Ugly Betty or Desperate Housewives). As it stands, Glee is the No. 1 new scripted series among adults 18-49, so it makes sense that the network would want to lock it down—and as Entertainment Weekly points out, the early pickup helps cut overall production costs for those surprisingly well-lit high school musical sequences. And worst case scenario, should Glee’s third season somehow prove to be its last, it also gives showrunner Ryan Murphy and his creative team a chance to plan things out well in advance and provide a satisfying resolution to Glee's overall mythology, instead of some sort of heartstring-pulling message about love and forgiveness, which would just be silly.
