Gnarls Barkley's Violent Femmes cover: Now with letching parasites

Stereogum has posted the brand-new video for Gnarls Barkley's cover of the Violent Femmes' "Gone Daddy Gone," the fourth track on Gnarls' album St. Elsewhere. What's the same? The vaguely badass xylophone and randy vocals (updated with Cee-Lo's cool detachment, of course). What's new? Nasty-looking, anthropomorphic ticks that surely belong on the computer-animated sex offenders list; upskirt panty shots; and (mercifully, only a few seconds of) the most terrifying sexual fantasy ever depicted in a music video (that's counting any homemade mashups that might result from the Dustin Diamond sex tape). That's right, bloated Cee-Lo-bug humping the dog hair (because we all know our individual hairs make ideal stripper poles for parasites) is just the start. That little vermin pursues his woman to the point of derangement, just like the desperate young fellow depicted in the Femmes' self-titled debut album.

The Punk Guy (also via Stereogum) has an interview this week with video director Chris Milk, who's already worked with artists ranging from John Mellencamp to Kanye West. Unfortunately, it doesn't give Milk a chance to explain just why the six-legged Cee-Loo bug has to pull those stripper moves and breathe out puffs of insect poison, or anything else about the video, including why Milk (apparently) had to be in Paris to work on it. Maybe that's the only place the bugs are quite this amorous. Either way, it's a refresing follow-up to the near-total abstraction of Robert Hales' "Crazy" video.
