Godzilla: King Of The Monsters comes to reclaim his throne in first trailer

The first teaser for the upcoming kaiju-palooza Godzilla: King Of The Monsters was all Millie Bobby Brown and no monsters. And the full-length trailer for the film, which debuted following discussion of the movie at the Warner Bros. Pictures panel, also opens with Brown watching in terror at an advancing big scary something as Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga), who plays Brown’s mother in the movie, warns in voiceover that our “original and rightful rulers, the titans” are returning to reclaim the Earth, and “they are the only guarantee that life will carry on.” Cue the monsters.

The trailer shifts from ominous to awestruck and back again over the course of two and a half minutes, with glimpses of Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah as well as the Big G himself alongside footage of wholesale CGI destruction. Overall, the trailer strikes a somber tone, suggesting director Michael Dougherty is going for something more like the original 1954 Godzilla—which has a surprising amount of gravitas for a giant monster movie—than his earlier horror-comedy work.
