GOP releases attack ad shaming a guy for cosplaying as Han Solo

Georgia’s 6th District is currently undergoing a special election to name a new representative, after previous incumbent Tom Price resigned to become United States Secretary of Health and Human Services last month. And while “mean-spirited” is just sort of how we do things in American politics these days, an ad attacking Democratic candiate Jon Ossoff has hit a bold new vector for Dark Side politics: Ossoff’s past history cosplaying as Han Solo.

Produced by the Congressional Leadership Fund, a Republican Super PAC (and reported by The Daily Kos), the ad seeks to make the 30-year-old Ossoff look childish by focusing on video from his time at Georgetown, from 2005 to 2009. Said stint apparently included some amateur theatrics with his fraternity, including a parody song making fun of “Georgetown Girls,” and a video in which he proudly declared himself “Han Solo, captain of the Millennium Falcon,” made a bunch of dumb Star Wars fraternity puns, and basically looked like your standard college-age idiot.

Liberally sprinkled with unauthorized Star Wars fonts and a sneering voiceover, the ad ignores both the fact that it’s been eight years since Ossoff was in college, and that he was associating with people capable of making a pretty kickass Chewbacca costume out of nothing but old shag carpeting. It also ignores the fact that Ossoff has built a career in the intervening years out of investigating international corruption, and that his non Kessel Run-based time at Georgetown involved studying under Madeleine Albright, the former U.S. ambassador to Israel, and the rest of the faculty at the college’s internationally acclaimed School Of Foreign Service. In any case, Alden Ehrenreich should probably keep a close eye on the fate of his political career.

The 6th District election is currently scheduled for April 18.
