Gotham makes us return to the death of Martha and Thomas Wayne
Here’s what’s up in the world of TV for Monday, November 24. All times are Eastern.
Top pick
Gotham (Fox, 8 p.m.): Gotham concludes its fall run with a return to the murder of Martha and Thomas Wayne. Bruce and Selina are on the run from assassins, and they run into Ivy Pepper (Clare Foley), who we haven’t seen since the pilot. The promos are touting the midseason finale as a defining moment in this origin story, and hopefully “Lovecraft” will continue the confident storytelling of “Harvey Dent.” Check back here for Kyle Fowle’s breakdown after the episode.
Also noted
Adventure Time (Cartoon Network, 7 p.m.): This week, there’s a bounty of things to be thankful for being shipped in from The Land Of Ooo, with Adventure Time premieres airing Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday nights. But not Thursday night, because Cartoon Network respects Oliver Sava’s holiday observances.
Jane The Virgin (The CW, 9 p.m.): After last week’s super romantic episode that ended with a kiss between Jane and Rafael, Jane is back to trying to avoid the father-to-be, but she can’t quite stay away (and who can blame her?). And now, Jane is barrelling at high speeds into a new relationship. It’s an unexpected choice for the show to be burning through so much story, but it’s also a refreshing change of pace for the typical love-triangle arc, which usually gets dragged out way too long. We’re along for the ride, Jane The Virgin! Luisa Update: still no sightings. Shouldn’t Rafael care a little more about his human disaster of a sister considering how often murder happens in his world? We are now accepting theories as to whether Luisa could be the elusive Sin Rostro.
Regular coverage
Star Wars Rebels (Disney XD, 9 p.m.)
Sleepy Hollow (Fox, 9 p.m.)
TV Club Classic
Justice League Unlimited: Oliver Sava returned last week to resume TV Club Classic reviews of the final season of Justice League Unlimited. This week, he takes on “Shadow Of The Hawk.”
Elsewhere in TV Club
Libby Hill has a For Our Consideration on the lasting legacy of Trading Spaces, which she argues set the bar for quality reality television and has yet to be matched. Also, be sure to check out the deadly gift guide put together by The AV Club.
What else is on
The Originals (The CW, 8 p.m.): Davina dabbles in dark magic; Rebekah has some mommy issues; Hayley and Jackson find a potential solution to their wolf troubles. According to the promo, no one is safe! But when is anyone on this show ever safe?
2 Broke Girls (CBS, 8 p.m.): Caroline and Max attend a motivational business seminar in the hopes of rebranding their cupcake company. Unfortunately, not even a rebranding could make this show better.
State Of Affairs (NBC, 10 p.m.): Charleston Tucker is back, but will she become a real character this week instead of just a bizarre, hackneyed caricature? Only time will tell. There’s also a new CIA director in town, played by Nestor Carbonell.
Castle (ABC, 10 p.m.): Castle has a hostage situation this week! An armed man holds up a bunch of people on the subway, and Esposito is one of them. We don’t like the message this story sends about public transportation.
Up (Disney, 8 p.m.): Treat yourself with one of the best animated films of the past five years. Torture yourself with one of the most emotionally devastating animated films in the past five years. If you’re like What’s On Tonight, you’ll be in tears in the first five minutes.
Winter’s Bone (CMT, 8 p.m.): Before she was Katniss Everdeen, Jennifer Lawrence played Ozarks teen Ree Dolly in this Academy Award-nominated indie thriller. We’re not really sure why it’s playing on CMT. The setting, we guess? But in any case, it’s a dark, raw tale, and baby J-Law is killer.
Monday Night Football: Ravens at Saints (ESPN, 8:15 p.m.): The Baltimore Ravens return to the place where they achieved their Super Bowl victory two seasons ago as they take on the New Orleans Saints.
In case you missed it
The Simpsons: Rowan Kaiser dropped into the Simpsons TV Club Classic coverage this weekend to look at “Hurricane Neddy,” which he calls a joke machine. Revist season eight with him, and then come back next week when Oliver Sava takes on “El Viaje Misterioso De Nuestro Jomer.”
