Gotham’s election is somehow more respectful than its real-world counterpart
Because The A.V. Club knows that TV shows keep going even if we’re not writing at length about them, we’re experimenting with discussion posts. For certain shows, one of our TV writers will publish some brief thoughts about the latest episode, and open the comments for readers to share theirs.
- Between this episode being titled “New Day Rising” and its pro wrestling-related storyline, Gotham is now playing to my dorky little wrasslin’ loving heart.
- Gotham really drives home the Trump comparisons with Cobblepot this week. Not only does his skin have a slight orange tint to it, the local news reporters mention that he’s somehow winning despite running a campaign based on “name-calling and fear-mongering.”
- That said, I’d vote for Cobblepot over Trump any day.
- So the subplot about Nygma showing Cobblepot that he’s truly loved in the city is genuinely touching. Somehow Gotham has managed to construct a legitimately charming relationship between two outsized villains. I care about them more than any other characters on the show. That’s insane.
- “If I didn’t know better I’d accuse you of being a sentimentalist.”
- When your British butler wholeheartedly agrees with you: “well absolutely bloody yes.”
- Alfred isn’t sure how to track down the missing DoppelBruce: “Where do pain-resistant clones of multi-billionaire teenagers normally go?”
- Not only does Bullock get some more screentime this week, Donal Logue also gets a heartbreaking/lovely nod to Terriers: “I bet I’d make a kickass P.I.” I swear I got a little misty in that moment.
- Barbara continues to be the show’s Most Improved Character. She finally fits in with the tone of the show. This is what we in wrestling fandom would call a successful heel turn.
- I can’t believe that after all that emotional buildup, the show just kills off Alice. I was really hoping for more there.
- Am I alone in thinking that Jervis Tetch has been a supremely boring villain so far this season?
- I will admit that having the hulking wrestlers double as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum in Jervis’ Alice In Wonderland tableau was a nice visual touch.
- There’s no way Butch takes Nygma’s political rise lying down. He’s about to rebel against Oswald Cobb…excuse me, Mayor Cobblepot.
- DoppelBruce kissing Selina and then telling Real Bruce about it, which leads to Real Bruce wondering if Real Selina totally like likes him, was a little too weird for me. I appreciate the ridiculousness though.
- As if Barnes just watches Alice’s blood, which he knows causes some sort of weird infection, drop into his eye. Everybody within the GCPD is incompetent.
- That was the Court Of Owls that snatched up DoppelBruce, right? I can only imagine what kind of sinister, half-baked plans they have for him.
- I’m very curious to see what the show has planned for Cobblepot now that he’s the Mayor of Gotham. Lots of intriguing storytelling options there, but that doesn’t mean I trust Gotham to pull them off.
