A lot of our favorite television entertainers—and also some of our less favorite entertainers—won awards today from the Alliance for Women in Media. The nonprofit annually hands out the Gracie awards, which honor “programming created by women, for women, and about women”—a mission statement that encompasses sitcoms, nightly news broadcasts, radio shows, and variety shows. An unlikely trio of actresses makes up the top three acting honors: Mindy Kaling, Tatiana Maslany, and Mariska Hartigay are all to receive awards for The Mindy Project, Orphan Black, and Law And Order: SVU, respectively.
The awards also honored a few unsung heroines in the sidelines of cult shows: Erika Christensen is honored for her work on Parenthood and Christa Miller from Cougar Town. Jane Fonda, oddly, is also recognized for her work on The Newsroom, which, okay. The same bizarre juxtaposition applies to the scripted shows: Veep and Scandal, two shows that receive a lot of critical praise, both received awards, and so did Super Fun Night, a show that is almost universally ignored. And Lesli Linka Glatter, who has put in astounding work on shows like Homeland, Justified, Masters Of Sex, and even The Walking Dead, will be awarded a Gracie for her work on… The Newsroom. (Sigh.)
Gracies will also be given to several news segments, including 60 Minutes, Good Morning America, and Nick News With Linda Ellerbee. Meanwhile, Oprah Winfrey is also getting an award for being Oprah Winfrey on her talk show, Oprah’s Lifeclass. But most importantly, Wanda Sykes’ show HERLARIOUS will be receiving an award for “Outstanding Special Or Variety.” Because it is herlarious, guys.
