Okay, so nobody gives a shit about the Grammys, but if there's one thing they usually do correctly, it's honoring the legends with those Lifetime Achievement Awards, right? Well, maybe not: Compared to the past few years of paying tribute to people like David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, and The Doors, the batch of 2008 honorees feels more than a little stale, with nods going to songwriter Burt Bacharach, jazz drummer Max Roach, bluegrass innovator Earl Scruggs, singer Cab Calloway, violinist Itzhak Perlman, and motherfucking Doris Day. Nothing against any of these artists—they all deserve their place as music legends (except maybe Doris Day)—but this has got to be one of the most snooze-worthy, geriatric-friendly rounds of nominees in Grammy history. Is the NARAS openly admitting that no one outside of senior citizens even pays attention to the Grammys anymore? For God's sake, at least throw the Ramones on there. (Of course, once news broke around the A.V. Club offices it was all, "WTF?! WHEREZ ARCADE FIRE DUDEZZ??!11?")
UPDATE: In my rush to rile everyone, I totally missed the inclusion of The Band in the list of nominees, whose hipster cache sort of evens things out. Sorry for the omission.
