Great Apes write songs for restless youth on California Heart

Great Apes seem to enjoy working around a theme. The band’s debut record, Threads, saw Brian Moss drawing lyrical inspiration from conversations with his friends, and on their last EP, Playland At The Beach, Moss sang about important locations in San Francisco. For the band’s sophomore album on Asian Man Records, Great Apes went a little more fictional, as Moss used California Heart as a means of exploring the life of a disaffected teenager in Fresno, California. The A.V. Club is streaming all of the record below, which sees Great Apes ripping through bouncy punk tunes while weaving a tale that could easily call a Hold Steady record home.

Pre-orders for California Heart are available now through Asian Man Records.
