Green Day and No Doubt, two titans of ‘90s alternative rock, have both debuted new singles. Green Day’s “Oh Love” comes from ¡Uno!, one-third of the band’s forthcoming trio of records, aptly named ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tres! The records, which will force all of America’s rock journalists to figure out how to type upside down exclamation points, come out Sept. 25, Nov. 13, and Jan. 15, respectively, and are all supposedly very different. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told Rolling Stone, “The first one is power pop. The second is more garage-y, Nuggets-type rock. And the third is supposed to be epic. With the first album you're getting in the mood to party. On the second one, you're at the party. And the third album you're cleaning up the mess."
The Bay Area band once again worked with Dookie producer Rob Cavallo, who attempted to steer the group back to simplicity and songwriting, rather than over-the-top concept albums that get made into Broadway musicals, a la American Idiot. If “Oh Love” is any indication as to what expect on the first record, fans are in for a fairly Green Day-ish take on pop balladry, complete with overwhelmingly simplistic lyrics.
No Doubt’s latest single, “Settle Down,” comes after an eight-year hiatus, during which Gwen Stefani put out two pretty good solo records, had a couple of kids, and started a fashion empire. The band’s new Push And Shove hits stores Sept. 25, and, if this video is any indication, should be equal parts ska, new wave, and posturing—in other words, classic No Doubt.
