Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong to play Leighton Meester's boyfriend in a new movie
Billie Joe Armstrong has already been seen on the Broadway stage, but now the Green Day frontman is about to make his first serious foray into acting. Armstrong will star in Like Sunday, Like Rain, an indie drama directed by Ray Donovan and Pulp Fiction actor Frank Whaley. The film will tell the story of a struggling musician, played by Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester, who somehow becomes the guardian of a young musical prodigy. Armstrong will play Meester’s boyfriend, while Debra Messing will play the mother of the boy. The movie is currently filming in New York.
Armstrong has previously had minor roles in a couple of movies, including Riding In Cars With Boys, This Is 40, and the forthcoming Anchorman: The Legend Continues.
Green Day is also set to appear on screen in two documentaries about the band: ¡Cuatro!, out Sept. 24, documents the recording of Green Day’s 2012 records ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré!. And Broadway Idiot, out in October, follows the stage adaptation of the band’s American Idiot.
