Greg Berlanti’s production company to imagine a tolerable Republican president
Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions has a whopping 10 shows currently on the air, including: The CW’s superhero weeklong lineup; that channel’s most popular debut of last year, Riverdale; and NBC’s political drama Blindspot, among others. Berlanti Productions’ latest effort appears to have more in common with the latter, as Deadline reports that NBC won the war to secure the pilot for Republic, “a White House drama from the Blindspot team of co-executive producer Alex Berger, creator/exec producer Martin Gero and Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Prods.”
Just as The West Wing chronicled a Democratic presidential administration while a Democratic POTUS was in office, “hopeful political drama” Republic will travel a similar route, following “the newly minted female Chief Of Staff to a moderate Republican president. With their administration in dire crisis, they find themselves under fire from extremists on both sides, defending their well-intentioned actions both politically and legally.” With Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal is going down in flames after this season, the White House playing field appears open. And it would be nice to see a Republican president on TV we could actually stand.
