Guinness to open first brewery in U.S.

Iconic Irish stoutmaker Guinness announced it will be building a U.S. brewery, according to a report at BeerStreetJournal.com. Diageo, Guinness’ parent company, said it hopes to begin construction in Relay, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore, sometime in the spring. The report said it will mark Guinness’ first U.S.-based brewery in 63 years.

The U.S. brewery will be similar to Guinness’ Open Gate Brewery in Dublin, which describes itself as “the home of brewing experimentation and innovation… where Guinness brewers are given license to explore new recipes, reinterpret old ones, and experiment freely to bring exciting new beers to life.”

In the U.S., Guinness’ flagship stout was previously brewed in Canada (under a license with ABI/Labatt in Toronto and Moosehead in New Brunswick), as well as imported from its homebase St. James’ Gate Brewery in Dublin. The report said the beers at the new Maryland location will only be brewed for the American market, and that its Guinness Stout will continue being produced from Ireland.
