Gus Van Sant’s new biographical film Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot, based on the memoir of the same name, tells the story of cartoonist John Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix), who became a quadriplegic after being in an auto accident when he was 21. At the premiere of the film, Van Sant talked to The A.V. Club about the long development process for the film, and how he, Callahan, and Robin Williams, who originally optioned the memoir, never thought they would see it get made.
