After months of rumors that they might be replaced by Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz (the writing team behind Thor and X-Men: First Class), Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are instead officially back on board to write the next Star Trek movie due in 2016. The duo wrote both 2009's reboot and this year's Star Trek Into Darkness, and have spent their career on sci-fi heavy projects both J.J. Abrams-related (Alias, Fringe) and not (Transformers and its first sequel).
Kurtzman and Orci haven't ruled out the possibility of bringing in a third co-writer to help hash out the story, as they did with fellow Abrams acolyte Damon Lindelof on Into Darkness. There's also no word yet on a potential storyline, although Into Darkness' brief appearance by the Klingons—and its demonstrated willingness to repurpose classic Trek villains—have made a larger confrontation with the Klingons the likeliest direction for the film to take.
Also as yet unknown is who will be providing the lens flares, as J.J. Abrams bowed out to concentrate on Star Wars: Episode VII. Abrams will still produce the film under his Bad Robot banner, and rumors abound that either Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), or Rupert Wyatt (Rise Of The Planet of the Apes) might take over. Chu got his start directing Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D, so if you've been waiting and hoping for Kirk and the Klingons to settle their differences with a dance-off, you might keep your fingers crossed.
