Gwen Stefani abandoning good vocals?

Well, that might be overstating it, but "Wind It Up," the first single from Stefani's new album The Sweet Escape (due out December 5), relies heavily on grating talk-sing vocals and features a yodeled, yes, yodeled, intro (which is actually a sample from The Sound Of Music). Overall, it's like listening to the chorus of the Black Eyed Peas' "My Humps" for three minutes.

Billboard.com quotes Stefani as saying the album has a "modern" sound ("The dance sound is very 'now,'" she notes). Will it be so modern that her actual voice won't even matter? Even on style shifts like No Doubt's "Hella Good," her singing still added something. But the voice on "Wind It Up" could be anyone's (even Fergie's!), surely making for yet another music video that millions of teenage boys will watch on mute.

Stereogum has an MP3.
