Gwen Stefani is making a cartoon that looks like a Harajuku take on Bratz
The Barbie brand effectively dominates the doll market, but in the early 2000s, the Bratz line took the world by storm and put a significant dent in Barbie’s profits. Thanks to their fashion-forward style and weirdly off-putting design, the dolls offered kids a hipper alternative to Mattel’s career-minded competitor. Sadly, the Bratz brand has been in decline for several years, but a new Nickelodeon cartoon just might revive the public’s interest in the whole “big head and tall, skinny body” aesthetic.
Titled Kuu Kuu Harajuku, the series will be produced by Gwen Stefani and centers around a pop group called HG5 that’s heavily inspired by Japanese street culture. This all comes from Entertainment Weekly, which points out that Stefani’s influence even reaches to the main characters, who are named Love, Angel, Music, Baby, and G after Stefani’s debut album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. (we’re not sure where G comes in, though).
Kuu Kuu Harajuku will premiere on Nickelodeon on October 3, and you can see a trailer for it below.
